WFTO Biennial Conference 2017 (Delhi)

9-13 November 2017, New Delhi

'Fair Trade, a path to sustainable development'

The WFTO Conference is the largest global gathering of organisations representing the Fair Trade supply chain, from producers to wholesalers and retailers. It is the only international event that brings all actors of the Fair Trade movement in one place. Taking place every two years, this event is usually hosted by a WFTO member in a city of the five regional offices of WFTO. The 14th edition of the conference will be held in New Delhi (Asia region) and co-organised by Fair Trade Forum India (FTF-I).

Rationale of the conference theme: “Fair Trade, a Path to Sustainable Development’

Long before the introduction of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Fair Trade is already contributing to sustainable development through fair trading conditions to producers and workers, and securing their rights are respected and realised – especially in the south. Through the 10 Principles of Fair Trade, WFTO prescribes organisations to implement best practices in the area of economic empowerment for small producers, gender equity, decent working conditions and fair payment, and the protection of the environment, to mention only a few.

With the spotlight now focused on the SDGs, WFTO takes this opportunity to bring forth current Fair Trade initiatives and show how these can be considered best practices towards sustainable development. We invited speakers from different areas including from experts in Fair Trade, corporate and public sectors to join in the discussions and contribute to the conversation.

Where Fair Trade meets Organic movement. The WFTO conference will which coincides with the 2017 Organic World Congress (OWC), also in Delhi. We are expecting over 250 participants from different organisations and businesses around the world, as well as decision makers, academics, students and other civil society representatives. The programme includes plenaries, workshops and informal networking on exciting topics that demonstrate Fair Trade as a path to trade justice, equity and sustainable development. Workshop sessions will focus on the responses of the Fair Trade movement to the changing market environment and its contributions towards the realisation of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, an entire day will be devoted to workshops and activities bringing together the Fair Trade and Organic movements, a unique chance to share knowledge, experiences and build synergies. Conference participants will attend the ‘Marketing and Quality Assurance’ track of the OWC2017, co-organised by IFOAM and WFTO.

Other topics in the programme will include the next Fair Trade Charter, and key internal topics (such as living wages, WFTO’s strategy for the next years and its governance structure, GS training workshops, and others).

Prominent speakers and workshop leaders/presenters have been invited to bring in expert opinion and contribute to discussions. Confirmed keynote speakers include Nicolette Naumann, Vice-President of Messe Frankfurt/Ambiente.

Leaders and representatives from WFTO members and other organisations will take an active role in workshops and other informal sessions, where the main goal will be to share experiences and learn from each other.

7 March 20017, Culemborg, The Netherlands - The fight for gender equality at workplaces is far from over. The recent reports by UN Women show that women in economic activities continue to suffer various forms of discrimination and unequal treatment. They also highlight that their labour force participation has stagnated[1]. This reality has mobilised the Fair Trade movement to a renewed call to action to fight, harder this time, for the rights of women, especially those engaged in economic activities.
