Coordinadora Estatal de Comercio Justo - CECJ and Federación SETEM have jointly published a new report on Fair Trade in Spain for the year 2009. The new book El Comercio Justo en España 2009: Cuestión de Género (Fair Trade in Spain 2009: A Gender Issue) reflects the series of reports of SETEM and the quantitative analysis of the state of Fair Trade in Spain by CECJ.
The book is divided into two main topics: growth of Fair Trade in Spain, and trade and gender equity. The new publication says that since 2000, Fair Trade income in Spain has risen from €7 million to €16.8 million in 2008 with an average annual increase of 12.1%. However, Fair Trade turnover in the country in 2008 has experienced a slight decline (2.9%) as compared to the previous year which saw the highest in Fair Trade sales. Coffee remains the top selling commodity product, while there is increase in the sale of handicrafts (30%).
The second and third parts of the book bring up the link between gender and Fair Trade. The second part discusses the framework of the analysis of the relationship international trading system to the status of women in poor countries. It argues why trade policies should be probed through a gender lens. Issues like impacts of trade liberalization to gender, and international crisis have been explored.
The third section presents quantitative data on women and gender with reflections from feminist perspective. A case study from Beijing on mainstreaming gender and empowerment, discussion on gender equity in the southern Fair Trade organizations, and the role of other actors in the Fair Trade chain are presented in the section.
This book is the outcome of the collaboration of SETEM and CECJ with financial support from the Agencia Española de Cooperación International para el Desarrollo (AECID), the Spanish agency for international development cooperation. This book is also the fifth publication by SETEM on Fair Trade in Spain.
