1. Scope of the SFTMS
This WFTO generic international standard specifies a set of general and performance requirements covering a wide range of production processes, services and trading conditions.

The standard is applicable to all activities, services, products or production systems over which the organisation has management control or influence.

Primarily it covers all activities that arise between producers (the farmer, artisan or worker) and the first or subsequent purchasing organisation (this could typically be an exporter, co-operative or direct importer). If activities go beyond produc- tion and exporting into retail and mainstream wholesaling, relevant trading issues must be integrated.

This Standard is applicable to any organisation worldwide which has the following principles embedded in its mission and practices:
  • Provides Market Access for Marginalised Producers.
  • Maintains Sustainable and Equitable Trading Relationships.
  • Fosters Capacity Building & Empowerment for producers.
  • Demonstrates Transparency & Accountability and adherence to local and international law
  • Promotes Environmental Sustainability.
Compliance with this voluntary standard means that an organisation has a proven set of prac- tices, procedures and processes that demonstrate sound behaviour from a social, economic and environmental point of view. In its ongoing relationship with suppliers, the organisation clearly follows basic Fair Trade principles. Its daily practices demonstrate active support of those principles. In addition, the organisation will be engaged in a deliberate process of influencing those who make decisions in the market place. After a successful, independent third-party audit and validation of a published report, the product sold by the Certified and Registered Organisation may carry a label communicating that this item was sourced and produced under Fair Trade principles and practices. The organisation marketing the product has demonstrated that it complies with the specific requirements of this standard.
