The Sustainable Economy bursts into existence on WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY
22 May 2009
akp_fairtrade Bacongco.jpgAn estimated 275,000 (and rising) people joined together on Saturday to celebrate the birth of a better, more sustainable way of living by circling the earth with drumming.  Drummers from different cultures joined together to Beat Poverty! Beat Climate Change! and Beat Economic Crisis!

Events took place during the global 48-hour day 9 May 2009 date, with live and recorded video footage being streamed through www.worldfairtradeday09.org as the action unfolded. BIG BANG!! kicked off in CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, where the Fair TRAID AID organised a lone drummer to play as the sun rose over the Pacific sea, to be joined by hundreds of samba-ing, jamming Fair Traders for a dawn ‘drum jam’ on the beach.    Two hours later traditional musicians gathered together to watch the sun rise over Red Beach Honiara, Guadalcanal in the SOLOMON ISLANDS to mark the start of World Fair Trade Day there.

When Asia took over, musicians stormed the very top of Taipei 101 – the tallest building in the TAIWAN for an hour-long drum session in the clouds; while in MANILA drumming filled the biggest shopping mall in Asia with foot-tapping, conscience-raising fun!  PeopleTree Japan organised a fashion show in TOKYO, complete with taiko drummers and a full programme of accompanying events throughout Japan; and Mitra Bali held a street party to celebrate how fair trade has a direct impact on women’s rights in developing nations.

The Association of Fair Trade in ZIMBABWE gathered over 200 artists, producers and musicians in the National Art Gallery Of Zimbabwe for BIG BANG!!; and COFTA (the Co-operation of Fair Trade in Africa) presented a music concert in Nairobi.

Europe took over with Fair Trade Breakfasts all over Europe presented by the 3000 members of NEWS (the North European World Shops network).  Fair Trade Iceland organised a drum jam in downtown REYKJAVIK and the World Fair Trade Organization took over The SCOOP at More LONDON where a non-stop 5 hour drum jam rocked the South Bank in the Spring sunshine, with young and old joining in our free drumming extravaganza to their grinning, music-inspired delight!

When sun rose in the Americas, drums rolled down the streets in Buenos Aires and the Fair Trade Resource Network got them banging along the beaches, towns and shopping malls of the USA from East to West.

Videos, images and reports from the events worldwide are continuously being uploaded at 09 WFTD 09 Website .

WFTD09 was celebrated one week before the Annual General Meeting of the World Fair Trade Organization, which will be held in Kathmandu in Nepal from 16 – 22 May 2009.   This will be the first annual conference under the auspices of the newly named World Fair Trade Organization, which inherits over 60 years of Fair Trade advocacy from the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT).  WFTO has recently released a thought-provoking short film that highlights the impact of Fair Trade policies on the cocaine industry, and asks an important question.
