Sir Bob Geldof digs Fair Trade Simpsons sculpts
08 September 2009
simpsoncraftvillageuk.jpgIt’s not known whether he watches the popular cartoon sitcom The Simpsons, but certainly, Sir Bob Geldof is enjoying the company of the wacky family – in fairly traded stone carvings on his bedroom shelf!

“The carvings are spectacular, they are currently on my 13 year olds bedroom shelf! What a great idea.  Well done and good luck. Bob,” wrote the singer-political activist in a personal note to Craft Village UK General manager Paul Young.

Craft Village
UK
, member of World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), helps small-scale craftsmen in Western Kenyan village Tabaka earn a living by selling soapstone carvings of The Simpsons.  With rights to use from Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, carvers used traditional Tabakan hand-carving method to reproduce quality sculpts of the popular Hollywood satirical cartoon icons.

Matt Groening, The Simpsons creator, was himself impressed by the talented craftsmanship of the Tabakan villagers.  “I was amazed and delighted.  Bart, Homer and Maggie and the rest have found new lives in soapstone,” said the award-winning American cartoonist.
