Safia Minney of People Tree gets royal approval
08 September 2009
safia_minney3.jpgLast week, People Tree’s CEO and founder Safia Minney was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) during the occasion of Queen’s birthday for her role in promoting sustainable Fair Trade fashion.

Safia, 45, who lives in South London with her husband and two children, has turned a life-long interest in social and environmental justice into an international Fair Trade business.

On receiving this royal recognition, Safia said:  “I am delighted by this great honour and share it with the many producers I have worked with across the world to build a credible alternative method of trade in the fashion industry.

"
I won't rest until The Queen has a closet full of her favourite Fair Trade frocks so she can go confidently about Her business overseas representing the strength and style of the British Fair Trade movement.”

Alongside Safia, big names in fashion like Conde Nast managing director Nicholas Coleridge, Burberry’s creative director Christopher Bailey, and Net-A-Porter founder Natalie Massenet also received the British royal recognition.

In 1995, a Fair Trade company was formed as a limited company and a shop was opened in the fashionable Jiyugaoka district, in Tokyo. A year later, its founder Safia added a Fair Trade Fashion Collection, using eco-textiles, organic cotton and hand woven clothing, to the products sold by Fair Trade Company, and the first People Tree collection was launched. With the expansion into Europe in 2001, Safia Minney has built up the world’s largest 100% Fair Trade fashion brand supporting 3000 farmers and artisans through 50 Fair Trade producer groups in 12 developing countries.

Both Safia and People Tree have received many awards over the years including being selected as one of the world’s most “Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs” by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and founders of the World Economic Forum.

Recently, People Tree received the Best Ethical Fashion Retailer Award by the Observer Ethical Awards 2009 for topping the rising ethical fashion and accessories market with the People Tree label available in over 100 UK shops.  The awards are instrumental in raisinf awareness of ecological and sustainability issues among consumer and businesses in the UK.

People Tree is an active member of World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and an initiator of the World Fair Trade Day, which is now celebrated annually on the second Saturday of May across the world.   People Tree is a major trend setter in the Fair Trade.  They not only pay their producers a fair price but also to make them escape poverty through promotion of sustainable practices, training and advocacy.

Looking forward Safia added; “I hope we see a change in Government regulation to build a genuinely empowering environment to put an end to socially and environmentally exploitative business practice and allow Fair Trade companies like People Tree to bring benefits to millions of farmers and artisans.”

Thanks to Safia, People Tree has become an icon in Fair Trade and in the fashion industry.  Many congratulations to Safia Minney and People Tree!
