Result of the SFTMS External Stakeholder Consultation Round Two in 2009

The second round of the WFTO external stakeholder consultations on the Sustainable Fair Trade Management System (SFTMS) Version 2 has now been completed and a report on the work carried out in 2009 is now available.  This consultation included participants from all five regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America and the Pacific) from 43 countries. ETFAM Trade Fair 2010
august_etfam.jpgThe annual European Ethical Trade and Fair Trade Marketplace (ETFAM) Trade Fair will be held in Beursgebouw, Eindhoven (The Netherlands) this coming September 19-21. The Trade Fair is a business-to-business exhibition that aims at pairing up producers of ethical and Fair Trade goods from developing countries with buyers and service providers in Europe. To be held in a form of a matching plaza, the ETFAM Trade Fair will feature a unique trade environment, a unique way of doing business in a professional yet informal manner.

Urgent appeal: More donations are needed for Pakistan's flood victims

pakistan_flood.jpgMore donations are needed for Pakistan as people affected by the floods have risen up to 20 million. Aid groups like Oxfam International are running out of emergency relief supplies, and fewer donations are coming in compared to other disasters. A public health catastrophe is threatening Pakistan. Cases of cholera and diarrhoea have been reported due to lack of clean drinking water and shortage of hygiene kits and facilities, such as, emergency toilets to prevent the outbreak of diseases. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that there will be a second wave of deaths, unless victims receive humanitarian aid.

The market for ethical clothing has more than quadrupled over the last four to five years (Mintel). Nearly three quarters (72%) of British consumers think ethical production of the clothes they buy is important (TNS Worldpanel). Ethical sourcing is more important than ever to the fashion industry. The Ethical Fashion Source Expo, organised by Ethical Fashion Forum, is the world’s only annual industry trade show representing suppliers of ethical and fair trade fabrics, components, and manufacture to the fashion industry.

The darker side of sport

In New Delhi however, where the 12th Commonwealth Games are due to begin on October 3, tens of thousands of poor people have already been evicted from their homes as the authorities "beautify" the city in advance of the Games - a process they call "streetscaping". The aim is to widen the streets and plant trees, and if any houses, huts or anything that might convey poverty to the expected athletes and tourists is in the way - it is demolished.

Shared Interest Foundation has Swaziland handicraft project all sewn up thanks to Comic Relief

swaziland_fair_trade_business2.jpgThanks to funding from Comic Relief, Shared Interest Foundation will begin 2011 working with businesses in Swaziland to increase their opportunities to earn a fair wage. Working in collaboration with the Swaziland International Fair Trade Association (SWIFT), Shared Interest Foundation will provide training for over 130 Swazi handicraft businesses. Swaziland has a population of less than a million people, yet it has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world.  With one in three people being inflicted with the disease, there has been a devastating effect on the nation’s small-scale economy.  In recent years handicrafts have become a huge source of national income.

First for Fair Trade: greeting cards from the slums
fairmail2.jpgWholesaler/retailer Shared Earth has become the first Fair Trade photographic greetings cards distributor in the UK. The uniqueness of this range is that the photographers – all teenagers from the slums of Peru and India – receive 50% of the profits from the first edition of printing of these cards. They also receive free medical insurance, help with their tuition fees, and photography training.
